Volunteer Tips
- Choose your volunteer jobs carefully, according to your interests, abilities, and community concerns. Make sure that you believe in the mission of the organization that you choose.
- Consider what it is that you hope to gain from your involvement. Are you looking to learn new skills, meet new friends or make professional contacts?
- Be realistic about the amount of time you can serve as a volunteer. If you must be absent, let your site supervisor know in advance.
- Expect guidance and direction from the organizations staff. Be sure to attend all orientation and training sessions. If you find that your time is not well spent or the job is not what you expected, discuss it with your supervisor.
- Keep a record of your hours, accomplishments and any costs you incur. This specific information can be used later when you update your resume or complete your tax return.
